Birth Injuries
A newborn may suffer an injury during the birth. Injuries during the birthing process can occur because of:
- A large baby – with a birth weight over 4,000 grams (8 pounds, 13 ounces);
- Abnormal presentation – such as breech, where the baby is delivered buttocks first;
- Premature babies – those born before 37 weeks;
- A long labor;
- Injury to the baby’s arm or shoulder known as shoulder dystocia;
- Injury to the baby’s brachial plexus nerves, called Erb’s palsy;
- Fractures to the baby’s clavicle or collarbone;
- Use of forceps or vacuum devices to deliver the baby can cause injury to the baby’s head and face;
- A baby who is not breathing on their own when they are born.
